Balance the Budget: Now is the Time

ARRA News Service - Tina Korbe, Hot Air said: When “Cut, Cap and Balance” failed the Senate and both chambers of Congress regrouped around new plans, the first to go of the three crucial elements in the House’s original plan was a balanced budget amendment. Neither of the deficit reduction plans presently on the table provides for the passage of a BBA. It’s also the element of CCB most frequently decried as unrealistic. But political lights from Thomas Jefferson to Ronald Reagan have called for such an amendment, as this video from GOP Labs illustrates.

Let President Obama say, “We don’t need more studies; we don’t need a balanced budget amendment.” If ever any unfolding drama proved the need for such an amendment, the drama of the past week has been it. Leave cuts to Congress and what do you get? CBO-certified gimmicks on both sides — even on the side of one sincerely trying to garner savings, one who says he also “wanted more.”

Florida Continues to Create New Jobs: 85,500 in Current Yr; 4,300 In June, 2010

By Florida Gov. Rick Scott: This month's job numbers for Florida are in and I have great news to share with you about our economy. This year so far we've added 85,500 jobs and 4,300 of those were in the month of June alone. The news that Florida is continuing to create jobs while the national unemployment rate continues to rise is very encouraging. It means we are doing things the right way.


The latest unemployment figures were just released and for the fifth straight month unemployment has gone down in Florida. That’s right…unemployment is down for five straight months — bucking the national trend. Take a look at the chart below which demonstrates the decline in unemployment here in Florida versus the national unemployment.

While this is good news, Florida families are still struggling with unemployment and economic challenges. That is what drives me to focus every day on getting Floridians back to work.

Just this last week, I visited Canada, Florida’s number one economic partner, and made three jobs announcements of companies that will be expanding their operations to Florida. It was a great economic development trip, and I believe that we are on the on the right path.

By eliminating burdensome regulation and cutting red tape so we can continue to move quickly to close deals that create new jobs, I will do all I can to add to the positive momentum. And, I won’t rest until we get Florida back to work.
I won't rest until we do.

After Four Years of Control of Congress, Her Reckless Economic Policies Have Serious Consequences South Florida’s Small Businesses

Pembroke Pines, FL. - Whenever the topic of the economy is addressed by Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, she can always be counted on to blame others for failed economic results, and she has never accepted responsibility for what has occurred during her tenure in Congress. But now that the “Summer of Recovery” has concluded and has shown itself to be a public relations fiasco and a failure in terms of real economic results- the time has come for Debbie Wasserman-Schultz to account for her record to the voters. Unfortunately, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz will never level with the American people and admit responsibility for the failed economic results that have occurred on her watch, and she will continue to spin, misinform, and deceive the public in order to maintain her grasp on power.

The economic policies that Debbie Wasserman-Schultz has supported, which constitute an unprecedented amount of government interference in the American private sector- replete with bailouts, unsustainable federal spending, a failed “stimulus” plan; government takeovers of banks, auto and insurance companies, and student loans; and the massively unpopular takeover over our healthcare system- have literally left our economy on the brink.

Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and Democrats took control of Congress in January of 2007. Here’s what her policies have left in their wake:

· The Democrat-controlled Congress has amassed more debt in the last four years than nearly the previous 230 years combined

· National Unemployment Rate has climbed from 5.0 to 9.6 percent

· The “Real” Unemployment Rate (U6) measuring unemployed people who are actively seeking work – skyrockets from 8.3 to 17.1 percent

· Florida’s Unemployment Rate- Spikes from 3.7 to 11.7 Percent

· The Failure of the “Stimulus” Plan- approximately 3 million American jobs have been lost since the passage of the “Recovery” Act in February 2009

· The Number of Americans receiving food stamps was 41.8 million in July 2010- up almost 10 million people since Jan. 2009

· Middle-class Americans have made their deepest spending cuts in more than two decades, slashing spending on such discretionary items as restaurant meals and alcohol during the recession

· The poorest Americans are spending more as prices increase for necessities like food and rental housing

· 72,000 “stimulus” checks were sent to the deceased and the incarcerated

The bottom line for our national economy: as the poor and middle class are forced to make substantial cutbacks to their household budgets, our federal government does just the opposite with its budget, and continues with its reckless fiscal policies that very much jeopardize our nation’s prosperity.

“The policies of Debbie Wasserman Schultz are holding the American economy hostage, and persisting with these same failed policies will only result in further damage to our economy that could take years to recover from,” said Karen Harrington, candidate for Congress in Florida’s 20th Congressional District. “Debbie Wasserman-Schultz does not understand that excessive taxation and regulation causes fear and uncertainty that does enormous damage to both household budgets and to small business owners. Americans have a clear choice in November- continue with the failed policies of Debbie Wasserman-Schultz that will lead to further economic ruin and dependency on government, or return to fiscally responsible policies that allow the ingenuity and industriousness of small businesses to lead us out of the economic wasteland that Debbie Wasserman-Schultz has led us into for the last four years,” said Harrington.

By Joshua Miller, Roll Call: There might be a dose of Teddy Roosevelt Republicanism coupled with Hollywood glamour coming to the Florida Senate race soon.

Businessman Nick Loeb — the boyfriend of “Modern Family” Emmy-nominated actress Sofia Vergara — told Roll Call on Friday he was “even more seriously” considering entering the crowded GOP field after Florida Senate President Mike Haridopolos abruptly dropped out of the race to take on Sen. Bill Nelson (D).

Loeb, who abandoned a 2009 bid for Florida state Senate to deal with a divorce, said he would make a decision about a Senate run by the end of September.

In an interview, the south Florida businessman, the wealthy son of former U.S. Ambassador to Denmark John Loeb, described himself as “moderate on some issues and very conservative on others.”

Loeb owns an environmental consulting firm and said being pro-environment was not at odds with his conservatism or Republicanism. “I believe in conservation, which is, at its root from being a conservative, as a Teddy Roosevelt Republican. I believe it’s a national security issue, having fresh air and clean water.”

Asked if he would be willing to put some of his own money in the race if he decided to get in, he said, “of course, you’re going to have to.”

Why Are We Selling Tanks To Egypt?

It has come to my attention that the Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress on July 1, 2011 of a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Egypt for 125 M1A1 Abrams tank kits for co-production and associated weapons, equipment, parts, training and logistical support. One of the greatest threats to Egyptian stability, as well as to regional stability, is the growing prospect of a new Egyptian Government under the leadership of the Muslim Brotherhood. If given control of the country, the Muslim Brotherhood would nominate its own candidates and turn Egypt into a radical Islamic state.

America must continue to stand with the Egyptian people and encourage them to build their own democracy with new political parties and freedoms. However, we must exercise caution with regards to military sales and support to the Egyptian Government until a government is formed absent of the radical elements of the Muslim Brotherhood that will maintain active peace with Israel.

As a Member of the United States House of Representatives, as well as a member of the Armed Services Committee, I strongly oppose any military sales of any kind to the Government of Egypt as long as the Muslim Brotherhood remains active in the political process. Doing so would seriously jeopardize the safety and security of the State of Israel. The last thing I want to see is Egyptian M1A1 tanks rolling through the Sinai towards Jerusalem.

Senate Leader Harry Reid Tables Vote On "Cut, Cap and Balance" Bill

“If they [Senate Republicans] want to debate it tomorrow for a period of time, they can do that, but I’m going to — I think this piece of legislation [Cut, Cap & Balance Bill] is about as weak and senseless as anything that has ever come on this Senate floor … The American people should understand that this is a bad piece of legislation. ARRA News Service, Bill Smith, Editor: A few minutes ago, Senate majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) led an effort to table and thereby preventing debate on the bill, considerations of amendment by democrats, or a vote on the "Cut, Cap and Balance" bill. The vote to table was down party lines (51-46) with Republicans voting to consider the bill and Democrats voting to not even consider the bill.

To repeat, Senate democrats, including Reid, could have opened debate and made amendments to the bill which if approved and the bill had passed would have sent it back to the House of Representatives for reconciliation. Obama had vowed to veto the bill if it reached his desk. Thus, Reid refused to allow the representative process to continue and instead chose to align with a dictatorial process.

What and where are Harry Reid's ideas? He has not proposed anything. He has not put forward what his position. He is not the Senator representing Nevada but the "chief lemming" who always waits to do the bidding of the President. The House offered a plan and passed a bill. However, neither Senate Democrats nor the President has put forth a plan. Today, President Obama continues his rhetoric. He has offered no written plan -- no action. He is today holding a "town-hall meeting" at the University of Maryland.

Also after tabling this bill, Sen. Harry Reid reversed himself and cancelled holding sessions in the Senate over the weekend.

Two thirds of the American people like the "Cut, Cap, and Balance" bill. It is not dead - but it is tabled in the Senate, ignored, and falsely maligned. It is now up to the American people to speak up and to force the Senate to take up this bill!

Our Federal Government has a spending problem and the United States is on the verge of becoming Greece. The Senate Democrats have no will to stop this from happening. They appear to have joined Reid as Obama lemmings.

Haridopolos Drops Florida Senate Bid

By Joshua Miller, Roll Call State Senate President Mike Haridopolos dropped out of the Florida Senate race Monday morning, citing conflicting responsibilities between his state Senate duties and his run to take on Sen. Bill Nelson (D).

“Today, I am announcing that I will no longer be a candidate for the United States Senate, nor will I seek any other office this year or next. Instead, I am re-dedicating myself to finishing the job you sent me to do here in Florida,” the Republican wrote in an email to supporters.

With his departure, the GOP field hoping to unseat Nelson is down to four. The announced candidates running in the Republican primary are: former Sen. George LeMieux (Fla.), former Florida House Majority Leader Adam Hasner, former Army Col. Mike McCalister and former Ruth’s Chris CEO Craig Miller.

Haridopolos raised a whopping $2.6 million in the first quarter and more than $900,000 in the second quarter of this year. [Where will this money go now?]

One GOP consultant’s early take was that Haridopolos’ exit could be a boon to Hasner.

Constitutionalists, or Kooks?

By David Bozeman: One is reluctant to call any tactic in the liberal playbook new, but the latest salvo against conservatives and Tea Partiers could surely qualify as bizarre.

A liberal friend recently remarked that politicians who advertise their affection for the Constitution clearly don’t have the people’s best interests at heart. Ouch! And remember the outcry when the Constitution was read aloud at the convening of Congress earlier this year? Joy Behar of The View wondered if this Constitution-loving was not getting out of hand.

It appears that any citizen who calls himself a Constitutionalist or Constitutional Conservative will be relegated to the fringes of American thought, no less a nut job than a John Bircher. How long before weak-kneed Republicans assure polite society that, “I don’t buy all that Founding Fathers/limited government nonsense”?

According to enlightened thought, the right-wing’s hidden agenda typically consists of theocracy and a roll-back of 100 years of social progress. According to NewsCorpse.com “Tea Baggers are quick to gush their reverence to the original intent of the Constitution — slavery, sexism, and all”. A 2011 Newsweek piece entitled “How Tea Partiers Get the Constitution Wrong” quotes Thomas Jefferson, mocking men who “look to constitutions with sanctimonious reverence, and deem them like the Arc of the Covenant”.

So, not only do “Tea Baggers” and conservatives use the Constitution as a disguise for their sinister agendas, they really don’t understand it, either. True, many Americans, this writer included, don’t grasp the Constitution in its totality, and even Supreme Court justices disagree over its meaning and application.

Still, citizens with only a modicum of education can comprehend the Bill of Rights, fully appreciative that those ten amendments limit the power of the federal government and retain specific rights for individuals and states. That people are embracing the Constitution should swell the hearts of civic activists who are forever promoting greater participatory democracy, but when gun-owners in Mississippi and Tea Partiers in Virginia start horning in on the debate, it’s time for the saner heads to issue dire warnings about heated dialogue and (cue the fright music) hidden agendas.

Liberal regard for the Constitution is far less predictable — they boast of their tolerance when reminding the prudes that the First Amendment protects Hustler’s Larry Flynt no less than your right to rail against ObamaCare.

Conservatives recognize that, while any style of governance must adapt to changing times, the glory of the Constitution is its unwavering affirmation not merely of the rights of American citizens, but the yearnings of human beings everywhere. Social justice was won, yes, by amendment, but also by extending constitutional principles to everyone. How great a document that we didn’t have to tear it up and start all over.

A New Republic piece mentions the “monstrosities” that Michele Bachmann and others associate with ObamaCare, and their desire to reverse the New Deal. And there we have found the liberal equivalent of the Constitution. They want political discourse and action to proceed from their own lofty ideals and noble intentions. They consider the Constitution broad, fluid and evolving, but Social Security and the reformist aims of FDR remain almost sacrosanct.

Liberals tend to hide their agendas (yes, they have them, too!) behind incrementalism, nuance and intellectual finesse. The Constitution, by contrast, is a blueprint for truth and decisiveness now. They are concerned, and well they should be, for the very spirit they seek to stigmatize is not only inspiring, it is contagious.

Loser of the week in Florida Politics

Yesterday, on FoxNews Sunday (July 10, 2011), Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) also was also a clear loser. Even with makeup for the show, he looked like a pasted up Zombie and could not articulate well for Floridians or his Democrat Party's progressive agenda. Nelson has long been labeled as a "blue dog" democrat but in fact in as such he is  nothing more than democrat eunuch serving the  progressive master's agenda while giving widow dressing to the public. The best that can be said for Nelson's presentation is that he still "smiles" well - hi "congressional astronaut qualification from over 2 decades ago.

Nelson has drawn at least one Republican challenger and early newspaper "rag" polling says Nelson is going to win. Conservatives, independents and even democrats concerned for our country had best wake up! It is time for Nelson to be retires - he is a reminder of neutered space jockey hanging out in Washington supporting the Obama agenda.

While we need a viable Space program, Florida no longer needs Bill Nelson to occupy political space in Florida. By the time of the 2012 election, Nelson will be 70. Time for him to retire! He doesn't have the "mojo" to support the interests of the majority of Floridians.

Florida D.A. Fired for Talking About Constitution Settles Case

by Madeleine Morgenstern, TheBlaze: A former Florida assistant state attorney who lost her job over teaching about the Founding Fathers and the Constitution settled her case for an undisclosed amount Thursday against the Florida state attorney who fired her.

KrisAnne Hall was fired last year after participating in a number of political speaking engagements, including at tea party rallies and on talk radio, in which she discussed her originalist views of the Constitution. Her boss, State Attorney Robert “Skip” Jarvis, said he received a complaint about her activities and gave what Hall described as an “ultimatum,” telling her to choose between her speaking engagements and her job.

“I told him I could not make that choice. I believe that my First Amendment right is my right and I would not stop speaking,” Hall said in an interview with The Blaze.
Hall subsequently filed a federal lawsuit after her dismissal, alleging her rights had been violated and Jarvis had no standing to order her to stop speaking on her own time. Both parties agreed to settle the case Thursday.

Hall would not discuss details of the settlement, except to say she was very satisfied and had her attorney fees paid. She will not be returning to the state attorney’s office.

“I believe strongly that I was within my constitutional right and within Supreme Court precedent,” she said.

Florida's Crack Down on Pill Mills Getting Results

And now we are making progress in putting the pill mills out of business.


By Florida Gov. Rick Scott: You’ve heard me talk about the steady progress we’re making in reducing unemployment for the last five months straight. But today I want to tell you about another front where we’re making progress – cracking down on so-called “Pill Mills” and the sale of illegal prescription drugs.

Illegal prescription drug abuse destroys lives everyday and the problem was getting worse. That’s why in March, I created a statewide Strike Force made up of state and local law enforcement to crack down on these Pill Mills. And the Strike Force is producing results.

Over the weekend, the Sun-Sentinel reported on the Strike Force's progress.
In just 3 short months, the “Pill Mill” Strike Force has made over 550 arrests, seized nearly 40,000 pills, 20 vehicles and more than $600,000 dollars in cash. And armed with a new law I signed last month, the strike force will have even more resources and stiffer penalties to fight Pill Mills in the future.

Together the Strike Force and the new Pill Mill law are making great progress in combating a problem that has cost our state too many lives.

The American Creed: ''We Hold These Truths...''

Chuck  Colsonby Chuck Colson, BreakPoint: The great British intellectual G. K. Chesterton wrote that “America is the only nation in the world that is founded on [a] creed.”

Think about that for a moment. Other nations were founded on the basis of race, or by the power of kings or emperors who accumulated lands -- and the peasants who inhabited those lands.

But America was -- and is to this day -- different. It was founded on a shared belief. Or as Chesterton said, on a creed.

And what is that creed that sets us apart? It is the eloquent, profound, and simple statement penned by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

I’ll never forget when I graduated from Brown University during the Korean War. I couldn’t wait to become a Marine officer, to give my life if necessary, to defend that creed. To defend the idea that our rights come from God Himself and are not subject to whims of governments or tyrants. That humans ought to be free to pursue their most treasured hopes and aspirations.

Perhaps some 230 years later, we take these words for granted. But in 1776, they were earth-shaking, indeed, revolutionary.

Yet today, they are in danger of being forgotten altogether. According to Gallup, 66 percent of American adults have no idea that the words, “We hold these truths . . .” come from the Declaration of Independence. Even worse, only 45 percent of college seniors know that the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are proclaimed in the Declaration.

As America grows more and more diverse culturally, religiously, ethnically, it is critical that we embrace the American creed. Yes, America has always been a “melting pot.” But what is the pot that holds our multicultural stew together? Chesterton said the pot’s “original shape was traced on the lines of Jeffersonian democracy.” A democracy founded on those self-evident truths expressed in the Declaration of Independence. And as Chesterton remarked “The pot must not melt.”

Abraham Lincoln understood this so well. For him, the notion that all men are created equal was “the electric cord in that Declaration that links the hearts of patriotic and liberty-loving men together, that will link those patriotic hearts as long as the love of freedom exists in the minds of men throughout the world.”

So go to the Fourth of July parade. Go to the neighborhood barbecue and enjoy the hot dogs and apple pie. But here’s an idea for you. Why not take time out at the picnic to read the Declaration of Independence aloud with your friends and neighbors.

Listen -- and thrill -- to those words that bind us together as a nation of freedom-loving people: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

These are the words that Americans live for -- and if necessary, die for.
